Born in Rome in 1943, Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone is one of Italy’s leading entrepreneurs and has held the title of Cavaliere del Lavoro (Knight of the Order of Merit for Labour) since 2006. The group he founded now comprises four listed companies and several unlisted ones, operating across various sectors ranging from real estate and cement production to publishing, major infrastructure projects, and finance. He is the publisher of Il Messaggero (Rome), Il Mattino (Naples), Il Gazzettino (Venice), Corriere Adriatico, Nuovo Quotidiano di Puglia, and the free daily Leggo. He is also a major shareholder in MPS, Acea (the Rome municipality’s multi-utility company), and Assicurazioni Generali, where he served as Vice Chairman from 2010 to 2022. From 2006 to 2012, he was Vice Chairman of the bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena. Since 2002, he has served as President of the Associazione Amici della LUISS (Friends of LUISS Association). Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone has three sons—Francesco (b. 1968), Alessandro (b. 1969), and Azzurra (b. 1973)—who sit on the boards of directors of the Group’s various holding companies and subsidiaries. Francesco Caltagirone has led Cementir Holding as Chairman and CEO since 1996. Alessandro Caltagirone heads the Group’s real estate operations. Azzurra Caltagirone is Vice Chairman of the Group’s holding company and Chairman of Caltagirone Editore.
